WHERE THE CONDORS FLY PARA ONDE VOAM OS CONDORES O realizador chileno Carlos Klein acompanha o realizador russo Victor Kossakovsky durante as filmagens de seu último filme. Chilean film director Carlos Klein accompanies Russian filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky during the shooting of his latest film. In Patagonia, at Lake Baikal and in Shanghai, Victor Kossakovsky explores the singular relationships between places and people on opposite sides of the world. Carlos Klein documents the making of this ambitious film in a very personal way, driven by his own inner search for images that still have an impact on us. While doing so, he reveals his own and Kossakovsky‘s ambiguous attitude towards filmmaking. “Where the Condors Fly” is more than a making-of. It‘s a personal, critical and deeply humorous reflection about filmmaking and its possibilities and limitations. Like a matrouchka doll, it tells the story of a filmmaker making a film about another filmmaker who is himself making a film. Apoio | Kind support |

With Imaginarium, I wanted to address the subject of memory linked to the public space of the city of Buenos Aires, filming its most representative sculptures and monuments or those that struck me the most. In this way, my intention was to leave open questions regarding the representation of historic events and important figures, myths and other fictions, through the city’s sculptures: What is a monument? What representations do they construct in our social imaginary? What kind of gaze looks at the monuments and travels through the spaces where they are found? What visual links and breaks may be found between a monument and its surroundings in public squares, streets, and buildings? |

Born in Luanda in 1951, António Ole became one of the most known contemporary artists of Angola. He studied afro-american culture and cinema in California but returned to the “red earth” of his land of birth to get inspired by it, working on themes such as colonization, hunger and specially on the human capacity for resistance. In the 70ths he started making documentaries, for example “Carnaval d Vitória” or “O Ritmo dos Ngola Ritmos”, yet his today work takes to other forms beside film: painting, sculptur, photography, installations, video. Beside himself seeing as “being behind the camera but not on the other side”, the artist agreed to this documentary portrait by the portuguese filmmaker Rui Simões. “I agree that I have gained human and artistically very precious experiences, ethically I should share this with the people. It is worth to make a documentary. Why not?” |

Picasso’s “Guernica” is the image of a disproportionate attack on unarmed civilians to demoralize and subjugate a whole population. This changed the “rules” of the traditional war and opened a new scenario: targeting civilians became a priority to anyone looking for political aims, from every ideology, external or internal enemies, or even the governments. A reading of the painting from the present must take this into consideration: Picasso’s intuition to guess in that action a turning point that ushered in today’s use of terror against the civilians.

Over the past decades Japan has been heavily confronted with a diverse range of abandoned sites. These ‘contemporary ruins’, or ‘haikyo’ as they are usually referred to, can be a result of the Japanese economic downturn, various rural exoduses, or most recently the Tohoku earthquake triggering the devastating tsunami that in turn induced the nuclear disaster of Fukushima Daiichi.

Nowadays, young girls are not interested in learning how to embroider, and the laborious techniques typical of Nisa are sadly becoming obsolete. What impact will “Valquiria Enxoval” a sculpture 16 meters in length of the artist Joana Vasconcelos will have on the survival and the socio-cultural significance of this special kind of embroidery, for the future of this town? “Enxoval” it is not a film about Joana Vasconcelos, or an anthropological survey about the handicraft techniques of Nisa, but a documentary about contaminations. Time, space and identity are the main concepts of the film.

PAINTING THE MOMENT As a painter, Fabienne Verdier is intent on seizing the moment: she seeks in her brush strokes the incarnation of the life force that animates all things, as well as the spontaneous expression of nature’s power and the movements of the soul. She draws her inspiration from the philosophy and practices of the Taoist masters with whom she studied for ten years. She wrote about her courageous voyage of initiation in a best-seller, “Passagère du Silence” Although she stands at the margins of the fashion-driven art world, the way in which she bridges East and West is very much of our time, and, perhaps, ahead of it. |
