O festival de cinema internacional Arsenals tem estado presente em Riga nos últimos vinte anos. Introduziu uma nova estética cinematográfica e foi dos poucos eventos permitidos na Era Soviética. Ao longo do tempo tem vindo a influenciar a cultura e sociedade da Europa de Leste, deslumbrando continuamente com a sua criatividade. O filme é um retrato do realizador, o pai de Arsenals e o cavaleiro fiel do surrealismo.
The international film festival Arsenals has been a fixture on the Riga scene for the last 20 years. It has introduced new film aesthetic and was one of the only creatively free events in Soviet times. Over the years the festival has influenced culture and society in Eastern Europe, continually dazzling us with its creative point. The film is a portrait of the director, the father of Arsenals and the trusty knight of surrealism.

Holger Hiller é um músico que, desde o início da década de 80, começou a apresentar compositores modernos do movimento avantgarde, criando pop music a partir desta base. Desde então, percorreu um longo caminho. De estações como as de Hamburgo, Londres ou Tóquio, com uma inspiração underground fenomenal, ao trabalho num estúdio de gravações, os seus últimos trinta anos foram repletos de vida e côr. Finalmente, encontramo-lo em Berlim, onde abandonou por completo a música numa tentativa de vivência de classe média. Mas será realmente possível um músico deixar um dia de o ser?
Holger Hiller is a musician who started in the early eighties to sample modern composers of the avantgarde and make popmusic out of it. Since then he came a long way. From stations like Hamburg, London and Tokyo, a phenomenal underground inspiration or a no selling music studio worker, the last thirty years have been colourful. Finally we meet him in Berlin where he abandoned doing music completely and tries a middleclass life. But is it possible for a musican not to be a musician anymore?

Eis o retrato da vida extraordinária de Muhai Tang, um maestro chinês. Nascido em 1949, o ano da fundação da República Popular Chinesa, e educado durante a Revolução Cultural, parecia destinado a ter de abandonar o seu sonho em proseguir com uma carreira musical. Contudo, o seu talento e perseverança e o apoio de Herbert von Karajan trouxeram-no ao mundo das salas de espectáculo.
Hoje, Muhai Tang é um nómada global. Que vagueia por entre os mundos que une com a sua música. A sua história pessoal, intercalada com a censura histórica, é típica da China da sua geração. Conseguiu desde cedo aceder à cultural ocidental através da música. A vida e trabalho de Muhai Tang são exemplares de uma China em mudança e do enriquecimento do mundo graças a um artista dividido entre o Este e o Oeste.
A portrait of Chinese conductor Muhai Tang’s extraordinary life. Born in 1949, the founding year of the People’s Republic of China, and raised during the Cultural Revolution, it seemed as if he would have to abandon his dream of a career in music. However, his talent, perseverance and the support of Herbert von Karajan ultimately brought him to the world’s concert halls.
Today, Muhai Tang is a global nomad. A wanderer between the worlds which he unites with music. His personal history, interspersed with historical caesurae, is typical for Chinese of his generation. He gained access to western culture early on through music. Muhai Tang’s life and work are exemplary of a changing China and the enrichment of the world by an artist between East and West.

Outras Cartas ou o Amor Inventado parte da obra literária Novas Cartas Portuguesas, escrita em conjunto pelas Três Marias nos anos 70, como pretexto para um pequeno inventário cinematográfico, um documentário que cruza esse legado literário com diferentes situações, contextos e interlocutores; ligando material de arquivo do processo de tribunal (a que as autoras foram sujeitas quando o livro foi publicado) a uma procura muito pessoal e labiríntica sobre o amor.
Other Letters or The Invented Love deals with the passionate book “New Portuguese Letters”, a collective work written by the authors known as the Three Marias in the 70s, as a pretext for a short cinematographic inventory about relationships and affection between people today and always. The book is inspired by letters written by a nun in the seventeenth century and has a strong political dimension that creatively challenges the social and sexual roles. The documentary crosses this literary legacy with different situations, contexts and interlocutors; and interweaves archive material from the court case after the authors were charged by the authorities with indecency when the book was published and a labyrinthine questioning about the nature of love

Aos 63 anos de idade, Jiri Kylian é um dos mais importantes coreógrafos da sua geração. Autor de mais de uma centena de trabalhos, muitos dos quais parte integrante do reportório de alguns dos mais importantes centros de dança do mundo inteiro. Apesar da sua fama internacional, até hoje nunca tinha sido feito nenhum documentário sobre Kylian. O que não é mera coincidência, mas o fruto da relutância extrema do coreógrafo em empreender tal exercício. O ter aceite participar neste documentário é, em si, algo excepcional.
At 63 years of age, Jiri Kylian is one of the most important choreographers of his generation. He is the creator of more than one hundred works, several of which form part of the repertoires of some of the greatest dance centres throughout the world.
In spite of his international fame, to this day there has never been a documentary dedicated to Kylian. This isn’t a mere coincidence, but is due to the choreographer’s extreme reluctance to engage in such an exercise. The fact that he has accepted to participate in a documentary is therefore exceptional.

Ramón Vinyes (1882 – 1952) foi escritor, jornalista, professor e mentor de jovens artistas, entre os quais Gabriel García Márquez, que lhe prestou homenagem com o “sábio catalão” em “Cem Anos de Solidão”. Três estadias longas (25 anos) na Colômbia determinaram o curso da sua vida. Apesar de a Colômbia lhe ter dado o reconhecimento que a Catalunha lhe negou, sentiu-se sempre despedaçado entre duas línguas, dois países e duas formas de entender a vida e a arte.
Ramón Vinyes (1882 - 1952) was a writer, journalist, teacher and mentor of young artists, among them Gabriel Garcia Márquez who paid tribute to him thanks to the “catalan wise man” character in “One Hundred Years of Solitude”. Three long stays (25 years) in Colombia determined the course of his life. Although Colombia gave him the recognition Catalonia refused to give him, he felt torn between two languages, two countries and two ways of understanding life and art

Neste documentário podemos espreitar algumas etapas do processo de construção da gaita-de-foles.
Acompanhamos o dia-a-dia de quem põe toda a sua alma, engenho e arte na criação e manutenção das gaitas-de-foles.
A relação dos artesãos com o fruto da sua criação e a cumplicidade que estabelecem com aquela peça artesanal, que depois de pronta, se transforma numa ferramenta inseparável do músico, num instrumento popular que enche de alegria ruas e palcos.
It is in the workshop “Sounds of Music”, located on the west coast, Puerto Rio, County of Torres Vedras, that Mário Estanislau and Victor Félix give life and voice to the bagpipes, accordions, ukuleles and bandolins.
In this documentary, we can peek some stages of the construction process of the bagpipes.
We follow the day-to-day of those who puts all their soul, wit and art in the creation and maintenance of bagpipes.

Trabalhador incansável e em múltiplas frentes artísticas, o arquitecto Raul Lino (1879 - 1974) deixou uma obra fundamental para o entendimento dos modos portugueses de ser e habitar. O filme aborda esse legado a partir de textos publicados pelo arquitecto, os quais situam a problemática da casa num contexto bem mais amplo do que aquele colocado pelos problemas da sua simples edificação. Imaginadas e desenhadas para pessoas, sendo por isso espelhos das suas personalidades, dos seus gostos e das suas memórias, as Casas são o ponto de encontro entre o Homem, a Arte e a Natureza. Daí, a tremenda responsibilidade da Arquitectura: de quem a faz e de quem a usa.
Indefatigable worker in various artistic areas, the architect Raul Lino (1879 - 1974) has left a fundamental work for the comprehension of the Portuguese ways to be and to live. The film approaches this heritage proceeding from the architect’s published texts, those which situate the problematic of a house into a very ample context which is much broader than the problems of its mere edification. Imagined and sketched for persons, but also perceived as mirrors of their personalities, of their likes and memories, the houses become an encounter of human, art and nature. Here results the tremendous responsibility of architecture: of whom who makes it and of whom who uses it.

Uma rapariga está de visita numa cidade desconhecida. Vai passando por vários locais e sempre encontra as mesmas duas raparigas. Nunca falam, apesar de parecer óbvio que o fizessem. Vendo o mundo através da máquina fotográfica, Anna cai em si e apercebe-se que não vê as coisas como são, não fala com as pessoas e não vive. Anna caminha, caminha muito, mas apercebe-se que não sai do mesmo lugar. O caminho de Anna é também o de uma turista e de como esta percepciona a cultura, a arte e os lugares a si estranhos.
A girl is visiting a foreign city. She goes through many places and always finds the same two girls. They never speak, although it seems obvious that they should. As she sees the world through the camera, she realizes what she’s been going through: she doesn’t see with her own eyes, she doesn’t speak, she’s not living… Anna walks, walks a lot, but she realizes she is not going too far, she’s not moving.

Ao deitar fora o prático e o funcional que compõem os objectos de todos os dias, devolve-os ao seu estádio primário, guiando a consciência do observador a pormenores requintados, enquanto penetra nas várias camadas do imaginário poético.
This film is constructed upon the visual poetry between what you hear and see, and a sensual fluidity that is not based on the cause and effect relationship. It casts away the practicalities and functionalities commonly defined in real-world objects by returning things to their raw state, and guiding the viewer’s awareness to the finer details, while intertwining layers of poetic imagery.

Interview with Paula Rego on a cold bench. The artist draws a conversation of life and creation with the winter sun on her face. This was a small film produced to be presented in her Honoris Causa in the University of Lisbon in February 2011. The conversation took place in her “Casa das Histórias” in Cascais. Everything else is a body of work made with “blood”.

A intervenção humana na mutabilidade da cidade e do território, é documentada na análise da zona histórica. Nestes espaços/territórios de carácter social é evidenciada a relacão dos cidadãos com o meio que habitam, a forma como o alteram e nele intervêm. O filme pretende criar um território ficcionado, alcançando uma estética abstracta focada nas cores e texturas explícitas nas fachadas dos edifícios.
Visual reflexion about Oporto’s urban landscape. The human intervention in the mutability of the city and territory, is documented by analyzing the historic zone. In these spaces/territories of social character is evidenced the relation of the citizens with the place where they live, the way how they change it and interact with. The film pretends to create a fictional territory, reaching an abstract aesthetic focused on the colours and textures of the facades of the buildings.

Numa altura em que os seus patrocinadores deixaram de o ajudar, tem de buscar novas direcções. O que o mantém vivo é a sua busca – não apenas de lugares, mas também de “artefactos da cidade”. É por isso que colecciona lixo possuidor de uma certa beleza, que junta em colagens.
Bobby (Robert Puleo) is an ambivalent skateboarder from New York City who is at the edge of his professional career. Being at an age where his sponsors won’t help him anymore to manage his life, he has to go new directions. But what keeps him up is his seeking – not only for spots but also for „artifacts of the city“. He collects garbage that has a certain kind of beauty and arranges them to collages.

Rudolf é um jovem de 13 anos, obcecado com cinema. Na verdade, o seu único gosto. Gosta sobretudo de filmes de terror, e usa uma técnica especial para os produzir – desenha cena a cena em longas tiras de papel. Os filmes são mostrados num projector de slides, acompanhados de banda sonora ao vivo. A história de Rudolf ilustra o conflito entre o mundo imaginário de um rapaz e a sociedade em seu redor, em que todos esperam que viva segundo determinadas regras e dogmas. Conseguirá ele fazê-lo? A maior surpresa surge quando o padre local pede a Rudolf que faça um filme para ser mostrado durante a missa.
Rudolf is a 13 year-old boy obsessed with filmmaking. As a matter of fact, it’s the only thing he is really fond of. His main interest is horror films, and he uses a special technique to make them - drawing each shot on long strips of paper. He shows the films on a slide projector with a special live soundtrack. Rudolf’s story illustrates the conflict between the imaginary world of a boy and the society surrounding him, where everybody expects him to live according to certain rules and dogmas. How does he cope with it? The biggest surprise comes when the local priest asks Rudolf to make a film to be played during the service.

No meu filme, Yapeng Tang é um examinando de arte. Fez o exame de ingresso à universidade duas vezes. Vamos segui-lo e experienciar a verdade da vida de um examinando de arte. Sorriem ao mundo, com o peso do complexo. Lutam por se imporem na sociedade. Contudo, com o crescente número de estudantes de arte graduados, caminha-se para a saturação. Encontrar um trabalho é cada vez mais difícil. O caminho para a universidade através da arte é, então, uma estrada brilhante ou um beco sem saída?
In recent years, more and more High school students choose learning arts as a way to university, partly for interest, partly for the university entrance exam pressure. In my film, there is an art examinee, called Yapeng Tang. He has attended the university entrance exam for two times. We’ll go behind him to walk into truthful art examinees’ lives. They smile to the world, but they also feel complex. They struggle to stand in the society. However, with batches of arts students graduate from university, the number is gradually saturated. Getting job is becoming more and more difficult. The way to university with art is a bright road or a dead road?

Kaspar Toporski é um jovem cineasta polaco, que em criança se mudou para longe da sua cidade natal. Ansioso por desenvolver os seus projectos cinematográficos, vive numa espera constante por respostas das empresas de produção. Passa o seu tempo a pintar, escrever e a criar o seu próprio mundo imaginário, que parece tornar-se cada vez mais real, a cada dia que passa. Desde a infância que admira crocodilos, que acredita serem as criaturas perfeitas, capazes de controlar a passagem do tempo.
Kaspar partilha os seus pensamentos com Helix, uma jovem fotógrafa, interessada na relação entre a captação das imagens e a morte. Está secretamente apaixonado por ela. Kaspar sai também com Schulz, um misterioso criador de bonecas, obcecado com as teorias da criação e manequins, elaboradas pelo escritor polaco Bruno Schulz, e com Bertold, um companheiro cineasta que nunca superou o fracasso do seu primeiro filme, destruído por uma equipa de produção sem visão.
Como forma de agarrar todas as suas ideias, Kaspar começa a rodar um filme sobre si, uma espécie de caderno cinematográfico, construído a partir de desenhos, fotografias, animações, sons, palavras e música... feito de sonhos e pesadelos.
À medida que o tempo passa, o filme começa a tomar forma, mas Kaspar afasta-se cada vez mais do mundo real, até que se apercebe que ele próprio poderá ser apenas um produto da sua imaginação.
Kaspar Toporski is a young Polish filmmaker who moved far away from his hometown when he was a kid. He is willing to develop his projects in cinema and is in constant wait for answers from production companies. He spends his time drawing, writing and creating his own imaginary world, which seems to be getting more and more real, day by day. He has always admired crocodiles, since he was a child, as he believes them to be perfect creatures, which are able to control the passing of time.
Kaspar shares his thoughts with Helix, a young photographer interested in the relation between death and the capture of images. He is secretly in love with her. Kaspar also hangs out with Schulz, mysterious doll maker who is obsessed with the theories about creation and dummies, elaborated by the Polish writer Bruno Schulz, and with Bertolt, a fellow filmmaker that never got over the failure of his first movie, destroyed by a short-sighted production team.
To pin down his ideas, Kaspar begins shooting a movie about himself, a sort of cinematic sketchbook, made from drawings, pictures, short animations, sounds, words and music...made of dreams and nightmares.
As time goes by, his movie begins taking shape but Kaspar slowly drifts away from the real world, until he eventually realizes that he himself might just be a product of his own imagination.

O documentário acompanha 9 meses de trabalho do grupo formado por Beatriz Horta Correira, Bela Silva, Graça Pereira Coutinho, Luís Nobre, Maria Pia Oliveira, Miguel Gaspar e Sofia Castro, que desenvolvem voluntariamente experiências, formas, projectos, obras e registo de imagens.
Manuel da Bernarda acredita ser esta uma forma de uma empresa portuguesa se afirmar num mercado global cada vez mais concorrencial.

In 2010, Manuel da Bernarda, creative director of the Fábrica São Bernardo in Alcobaça, welcomes seven sculpturers from different artistic fields. He gives them total freedom in his company to create whatever they want and the way they prefer. The documentary accomplishes during nine months the work of the group consisting of Beatriz Horta Correira, Bela Silva, Graça Pereira Coutinho, Luís Nobre, Maria Pia Oliveira, Miguel Gaspar and Sofia Castro who develop specific experiences, forms, projects, works and documentation. “Every day we are inventing ourselves new...having new ideas...perhaps by osmose, passing to the society”, afirms Graça Pereira Coutinho.

TWO TALES OF MODIKHANA

A pintura de Sudhir Waghmar leva-nos até Modikhana, um típico beco de escravos do antigo acontonamento britânico em Poona. Sem lugar na história mais conhecida de Pune, a narrativa de Waghmare descreve as ricas e intercruzadas camadas sociais e políticas da história de Modikhana. O processo da metamorfose dos intocáveis em “Dalits” e a sua politização sob a sombra de Dr. B. R. Ambedkar vibra fortemente pelos espaços, casas e pessoas em cada uma das suas pinturas. Em contraste, a busca pela forma da sua filha Kranti coloca-a face a face com o ambiente de violência diária em que cresceu. Fá-la questionar as formas possíveis de confrontar esta violência. Os seus esforços em expandir os horizontes da sua experiência pessoal enquanto estudante de arte na América, conduzem-na a uma forma única de expressão. Mantém a sua busca pela forma, tentanto descobrir alternativas criativas de colaborar com a sua comunidade.
As contradições e realidades de Modikhana, uma zona palco de inúmeras transições, são finalmente captadas pelas diferentes e altamente individualistas vozes destes dois artistas.
Sudhir Waghmar’s canvases take us to Modikhana, a typical servants’ back alley of the erstwhile British cantonment in Poona. While it finds no place in the mainstream history of Pune, Waghmare’s narrative reveals the rich and overlapping layers of the social and political history of Modikhana. The process of the untouchables’ metamorphosis into “Dalits” and their politicization under the towering shadow of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar strongly reverberate through the spaces, houses and the people in each of his canvases.
In contrast, his daughter Kranti’s quest for form brings her face to face with the daily violence of the environment in which she grew up. It makes her question the available ways of confronting this violence. Her efforts to expand the horizons of her personal experience as a student of art in America, lead her to an unique way of expression. She continues to search for form, and tries to find creative ways to collaborate with her community.
The contradictions and realities of Modikhana, an area that has seen much transition, are finely captured through the very different and highly individualistic voices of both these artists.

Dois artistas viajam, durante o Inverno, pela conhecida região vinícola de La Rioja, no Norte de Espanha. Um deles, Ignacio – um compositor espanhol de música moderna a residir na Finlândia – sente-se esmagado pela culpa traumática do acidente de carro da sua filha em Helsínquia: ela está em coma e retomará a consciência dentro de dez dias. O outro homem, Comaz – um pintor suíço a viver em Espanha – sofre de bloqueio de artista: o modelo das suas pinturas de mãos anunciou-lhe que não pretende continuar a posar. Ambos viajam a ver pinturas religiosas que retratam mãos humanas, em igrejas e mosteiros, debatendo temas como o conceito de Paraíso, de Dante, e o significado de fé e oração. Finalmente chegam à capela da reconhecida vinha de Remelluri, em La Rioja Alavesa, onde entre 1993-2000 o pintor basco Vicente Ameztoy criou a sua interpretação visual do último momento de felicidade entre Adão e Eva, no Éden. Enquanto admiram a pintura, os viajantes compreendem algo novo e fundamental sobre o significado do perdão. Que lhes dá uma oportunidade de um futuro melhor.
Two artists travelling in winter in the famous La Rioja wine-growing region of Northern Spain. One of the men, Ignacio - a Spanish modern music composer living in Finland - is weighted down by traumatic guilt at his daughter’s car accident in Helsinki: she is in a medical coma and will be returned to consciousness in 10 days. The other man, Comaz - a Swiss painter living in Spain - is suffering from artist’s block; the model for his drawings of hands has announced she no longer wishes to continue. The men go to see religious paintings showing human hands in churches and monasteries and discuss such topics as Dante’s concept of Paradise and the meaning of faith and prayer. They finally end up in the chapel of the renowned Remelluri wine estate at La Rioja Alavesa where in 1993-2000 the Basque painter Vicente Ameztoy created his own visual interpretation of Adam und Eve’s last moment of happiness in Eden. While gazing at the painting, the travellers understand something new and fundamental about the meaning of forgiveness. This gives them a chance for a better future.

O que aconteceu à pintora Beatriz González, cujo trabalho irónico tanto nos fez rir, que a levou a pintar um auto-retrato, nua em lágrimas?
Passei os últimos três anos a seguir o seu trabalho, enquanto esteve envolvida no projecto “Auras Anónimas”, um projecto monumental de nove mil coberturas de mausoléus no abandonado Cemitério Central de Bogotá, em busca dessa resposta. O documentário que daí resultou releva a trajectória de um corpo de trabalho desenvolvido em paralelo com uma nação a afundar-se em tragédia.
What happened to the painter Beatriz González whose ironic works so often made us laugh, to lead her to paint a self-portrait of herself, naked and in tears?
I spent the last 3 years following her as she worked on her “Auras Anonymous” project, a monumental work involving 9,000 mausoleum plaques in Bogota’s abandoned Central Cemetery, in hope for answering that question. The resulting documentary reveals the trajectory of a body of work that developed alongside a nation steadily sinking into tragedy.

We spent seven days with Philip Roth – in New York where he lives, and in his estate in the heart of Connecticut Woodlands where he wrote several of his novels. We filmed him at home and at work, in the streets of New York and in the countryside.
But mostly – we let him talk. And talk he did, confiding in us like never before, allowing us into his inner circle where we met the likes of Mia Farrow, a longtime friend who inspired part of his new novel, Nemesis. He spoke of his family, his fantasies, his obsessions, Jewish humor, the turmoil of sex, love, the writers he admired, fame, depression, old age, illness, impotence and death – all the while reading to us from his own books.
The last giant icon of American literature, Philip Roth cuts a fascinating, disrupting, indeed disturbing, figure as a writer. The deadpan recounting from childhood of the explosive death of a frog, and later the miraculous birth of a calf in breech, shape the emotional bookends of SOUNDBREAKER, Kimmo Koskela’s rock doc feature film of Finnish accordion legend and iconoclast, Kimmo Pohjonen. In the opening sequence, as we drop through a winter icy hole along with the artist, we enter a world of pure exhilaration. Fold away all thoughts you have ever heard about this instrument. A new Wikipedia entry for accordion just got invented! Extraordinary sounds explode from his custom-made electrified instrument. Using only accordion, voice, samples and effects, Pohjonen’s music transcends all musical genres all the way to a composition performed wih the world famous Kronos Quartet. His performances are reminiscent of the violence of Roman gladiators and the castigation of medieval monks. The film is a journey of an exceptional artists grounded in basic human truths.
